Bowtie & Critical Control Risk Management Course

This intensive four-part course transforms you into a proficient practitioner capable of building high-quality bowtie risk models and implementing a robust Critical Control Management (CCM) programme that prevents material unwanted events and catastrophic incidents.

Designed for safety managers, risk engineers, process safety specialists, and operational leaders responsible for managing major risks in high-hazard industries (mining, oil & gas, chemicals, aviation, rail, manufacturing, and construction).

Delivered across four practical sessions, the course combines in-depth training on the BowTieXP methodology with real-world CCM implementation using actual major-incident case studies and the ICMM Critical Control Management framework. You will build live bowties, identify critical controls, define performance standards, and establish verification and reporting systems.

A dedicated module explores how AI tools can now automate bowtie population, monitor barrier health in real time, identify degrading critical controls, and predict potential loss-of-control scenarios.

Build accurate, complete, and visually powerful bowtie diagrams using BowTieXP software for any major risk scenario, incorporating threats, consequences, escalation factors, and preventative/mitigation barriers
Identify and designate true critical controls (the ones that really matter) for material unwanted events using ICMM-aligned criteria and real case studies from fatal accidents and near-misses
Define clear performance criteria, verification activities, accountability, and reporting requirements for every critical control so that loss of control is prevented, not just hoped for
Apply advanced BowTieXP features including barrier effectiveness, criticality, metadata tagging, accountability mapping, and custom dashboards to drive operational discipline
Design and implement a tailored Critical Control Management system that delivers clarity, focus, accountability, and measurable performance reporting — while leveraging AI to monitor barrier health and alert on degradation before incidents occur
